SHOP SITE CASE STUDIES

1 The wrong color underwear
A famous lingerie designer came to us with a problem. ShopSite allows the admin to set order options for a product’s size and color, but not every color is available in every size. The office was overwhelmed with cancelled orders due to out of stock colors or sizes. There are tens of thousands of product/size/color combinations. Using our solution, the client is able to dump their 3rd party inventory software daily into ShopSite, and whenever a size is chosen the web site will update the colors list on the fly to show only available colors for that size. Since implementing that solution, “Out of Stock” errors have dropped to zero.

2 One product, infinite designs
A printer had worked out an arrangement with Adobe’s Scene 7™ when they contacted us. They were told they would be able to arrange colors, text, and clip art into their templates via a web interface. First we built them a web interface to the S7 API, and it came out beautiful and easy to use. Then there was the question of preserving the design and passing it into ShopSite. We built a MySQL database interface which would capture the design parameters. Using JavaScript, the shopping cart and checkout screens were updated to display the user’s original design in the cart while checking out and in the thankyou template. Furthermore, the database allowed users to save and mail their designs to each other, and the print shop used a database control panel to generate a high resolution copy of each ordered design when printing the final product. Orders using the new design template have exceeded expectations and the printer is looking to expand into other custom design markets.

3 Can’t ship there from here
A wine retailer called and asked if we could manipulate the shipping module to her specifications. Although ShopSite can calculate the rate to any zip code, she had a unique problem. Shipping to 29 States was to be done free of charge. 19 Other states had to be shipped via an intermediary and a surcharge was required and a different carrier was to be used, and 2 states could not be shipped to at all. Using our solution she was able to implement all of these parameters and now ships wine happily to 48 States.

4 Wholesalers have different rates and shipping
Several times we have had clients request special pricing for Wholesalers. Our solution allows wholesale customers to log in using their own username and password. They can then use the cart, viewing the same products on the same templates, but see a price which is specially crafted for that member group. When checking out, retailers may get free shipping with orders of $100, but wholesalers may have a different price point. Each time we have been able to set exact pricing and shipping parameters for wholesalers by expertly manipulating some of ShopSite’s advanced options.

5 Your order is in
Wouldn’t it be nice to enter your e-mail next to an “Out of Stock” symbol and be notified when the product becomes available? ShopSite has a nice “Quantity On Hand” field, but it is not possible to keep it updated when your product’s status depends on 3rd party companies. We built a solution for one customer which would update ShopSite automatically using online data from 3rd party vendors. Customers can now request notifications when a product is out of stock, and an automatic script is automatically sending “Your product is available” notices every day complete with pictures and a link to the order page.

6 How much depends on who you are – and when.
“Its right there in the chart”, our client explained, “Gold level members pay $400 per event, Silver level pay $600, and Bronze pay $800. Unless it is before the ‘Early Registration’ date. Then Gold members pay $300, Silver pay… Oh, and did I mention that Gold and Silver level members each get a certain number of freebies to certain types of events? We need to keep track of that too.” The goal was to use ShopSite to process the event registrations at the right price for each member and date, and keep track of the freebies. We did it in under 2 weeks.

For months I had been receiving complaints from customers about how hard my website was to navigate and find the items that they were looking for. The checkout was difficult. There was no key word search option, too many pages, and on and on. It was time to find someone to upgrade and make my website more user friendly. That proved to be a difficult task as I couldn’t find anyone that wanted to tackle the project, I was being told my website had too many issues that needed fixing and no one wanted to take it on.

She was able to keep my current web artwork, add some custom art to it and give my site a whole new ecommerce shopping system. We worked together for weeks coming up with ideas to make my website function like it should and to my liking. Merit was always there to answer questions and show me things I didn’t even know existed or could be done. A lot of times I even got an email answer to a question at three in the morning or the wee hours of the night! All of her emails and phone calls through the whole makeover process were always professional but friendly. She would explain anything technical until I was able to grasp it and work with it.

DesignswithMerit has been closely involved in the exciting evolution of our website. We wanted to integrate e-commerce into our six-year-old largely positioning website, and add event registration along with purchase ability for our various publications. Our events varied from three-day forums, two-day meetings and day-long workshops, requiring not just variable pricing but also integration of the pricing with our Members and non-members.

Designs with Merit incorporated Shopsite into our website enabling our clients to join our firm at one of three available levels which were tied to various discounts for our events. Thus event registration had to be tied not only to members and non-members, but also reflect the correct pricing when a person registered for multiple events. This information was transferred to a dynamic database that had to be manageable from our firm’s administrative back office for ease of tracking and follow-up. There were other elements like attendance at evening functions and dinners that needed to be tracked.

Website visitors and clients were also offered the ability to purchase various publications online. Merit installed Authorize Net into our existing website format which allowed credit card processing, automatic acknowledgement of receipts and event registration.

We faced several constraints; our site was rather narrow considering all the new elements that had to be instituted. Then there was a budget we needed to keep in mind. Merit and her team worked assiduously to get the site up in record time, and although we had some growing pains, most of the registration was enabled, and tracking achieved. Since that initial event, registration for workshops and other special events has been implemented.

When we started our e-commerce operations back in 2002, we didn't have a massive budget that is typically required at start up. After researching many solutions, we choose the "ShopSite" shopping cart application. While we understood it wasn't necessarily a state of the art, dynamic, best in class solution, it did offer the basic fundamental features that would allow us to get started with our budget. We've also been able to launch a truly world class e-commerce site using Shopsite and Design with Merit's intuitive aesthetic skills via some very attractive templates that integrate many dynamic and rich media elements.
